Angiopoietin-4 was isolated in a homology-based cloning project aimed at identifying new members of the angiopoietin family (Valenzuela et al, 1999). Angiopoietin-4 has been identified in human tissues. Angiopoietin-4 is expressed primarily in human lung. Angiopoietin-4 appears to represent the human counterpart of murine Angiopoietin-3 despite some structural divergence and the fact that both proteins have very different distributions in their respective species.
