abbr. Antp. This Drosophila melanogaster protein is encoded by the CG1028 gene, a member of a larger family of homeotic genes. Antennapedia functions as a transcription factor and regulates segmental identity in the mesothorax. It cooperates with other homeotic genes known as Fushi tarazu and Bithorax.
Antennapedia is a component of the so-called Antennapedia complex (ANT-C), which encodes other homeotic functions that are required to specify head and anterior thoracic segments (Kaufman et al, 1990). Loss of Antennapedia results in altered development of the embryonic thoracic segments, and overexpression of the protein can cause antennae to be transformed into legs.
