Appoptosin (303 amino acids) is the name given by Zhang et al (2012) to SLC25A38 [solute carrier family 25 member 38], a member of the SLC25 family of mitochondrial carrier proteins cloned originally by Haitina et al (2006). Appoptosin binds to APP [amyloid beta A4 precursor protein, Alzheimer amyloid precursor] the precursor of beta-amyloid peptide present in cerebrovascular amyloidoses and in the amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer disease. Appoptosin levels are upregulated in brain samples from Alzheimer's disease and infarct patients, and in rodent stroke models, as well as in neurons treated with beta-amyloid peptide and glutamate. Appoptosin induces reactive oxygen
