[Arenavirus Z-protein]
This protein is encoded by a number of enveloped single-stranded RNA viruses with bisegmented genomes known as Arenaviruses. Some of these viruses can cause hemorrhagic fevers in humans.
Z-protein is a small zinc-binding RING finger protein that interacts with a variety of cellular proteins (Borden et al, 1998; Campbell Dwyer et al, 2000; Djavani et al, 2005) and is important for virus budding (Strecker et al, 2003; Perez et al, 2003)..
Z-protein also plays a role in immune evasion.
