Astakines are invertebrate cytokines involved in hematopoiesis (Lin and Söderhall, 2011). Structurally they resemble mammalian prokineticins (prokineticin-1, prokineticin-2) in that they contain a conserved domain with 10 cysteines with conserved spacing, which is homologous to the structure of vertebrate prokineticins. Astakines have been found in several crustaceans, scorpions, spiders, ticks, as well as in hemipteran, hymenopteran, and blattodean insects. Dipterans such as Drosophila or Anopheles lack astakines (Lin et al, 2010). For specific examples see: Astakine 1, Astakine 2.
