abbr. AIM (a term with multiple meanings). This glycoprotein factor of approximately 50 kDa (and multimers thereof) is a constituent of fetal bovine serum and is found also in human serum. Treatment with 6 guanidine hydrochloride generates an AIM with a molecular mass 12-18 kDa. The factor induces bipotential glial precursors known as oligodendrocyte type 2 astrocytes (O-2A) progenitors to become type 2 astroglial cells rather than oligodendroglia. Astroglia inducing molecule may be a novel differentiation factor as it has little effect on type 1 astroglial cells and none of the known growth factors
