[Atypically-shaped cardiomyocyte]
This cell type has been identified in ventricles of mouse hearts by Omatsu-Kanbe and Matsuura (2009) as resident heart cells that are distinct from terminally-differentiated cardiomyocytes. The cells are rounded cells when cultured and gradually change their shape and then start self-beating. These self-beating cells are mostly multinucleated, do not appreciably proliferate, and undergo a further morphological maturation process to form highly branched shapes with many projections. The cells exhibit spontaneous action potentials arising from the preceding slow diastolic depolarization. Cells
