Liu et al (2002) have reported that Avian encephalomyelitis virus induces cell death by apoptosis in chick embryo brain tissues, characterized by chromatin condensation, plasma membrane blebbing, cell shrinkage, and nucleosomal DNA fragmentation. These effects are due to the viral structural protein VP3. The expression of VP3 protein activates proteases similar to caspase-3 and the effects of VPE expression can be inhibited by the inhibitor Ac-DEVD-CHO. VP3 protein localizes to mitochondria in infected cells, indicating that mitochondria may play an important role in VP3-induced apoptosis.
