Azurin

Azurin from Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a member of a family of small proteins known as cupredoxins (Arvidsson et al, 1989; Canters, 1987). These proteins contain type I copper centers and function as electron transfer shuttles between proteins (van der Kamp et al, 1992; Choi and Davidson, 2011). Azurin is a protein of 128 amino acids that is secreted into the growth medium (Zaborina et al, 2000). The protein can be internalized in phagocytic cells such as macrophages and has been shown to complex with, and stabilize, tumor suppressor protein p53, and to cause enhanced levels of reactive oxygen species, which can lead to host phagocytic cell apoptosis (Meplan et al, 2000; Yamada et al, 2002). Azurin functions as an anticancer peptide that inhibits tumor cell growth and causes ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
