[Epstein-Barr virus BARF0 protein] BARF0 is a protein encoded by an open reading frame of Epstein-Barr virus originally described as RK-BARF0 (Kusano and Raab-Traub, 2001). The protein binds to Notch-4 and induces translocation of a portion of the full-length unprocessed Notch-4 to the nucleus. The interaction of BARF0 with Notch-4 induces the expression of EBV latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1) and thus alters the physiology of EBV-infected cells.
van Beek et al (2003) have concluded that the BARF0 protein is unlikely to play a role in vivo in EBV-positive malignancies as the open reading frame is expressed in vivo but the BARF0 protein cannot be detected and may be expressed only marginally.
