[B-cell lymphoma/leukemia-3] This was identified originally as a translocation breakpoint junction isolated from a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (McKeithan et al, 1987). The old designation was BCL4. Mouse BCL3 has been isolated by Bhatia et al (1991). TThe BCL3 gene encodes a subunit-specific inhibitor of nuclear factor NF-kappa-B, inhibiting DNA binding of NF-kappa-B p50 homodimers (Wulczyn et al, 1992; Franzoso et al, 1992). Bours et al (1993) have reported that BCL3 can also directly transactivate NF-kappa-B via association with DNA-binding NFKB2 homodimers. Expression of BCL3 protects T-cells from cell death by apoptosis
