[Brain injury-derived neurotrophic peptide] BINP is a fragment of 13 amino acids (EALELARGAIFQA) of a novel 15 kDa neurotrophic factor (see also: Neurotrophins) isolated from Gelfoam implanted at the site of injury caused in neonatal rats (Hama et al, 1995).
Immunoblotting experiments demonstrate that the factor is produced by astrocytes. The 13-mer peptide promotes survival of septal cholinergic and mesencephalic dopaminergic neurons in culture and rescues hippocampal neurons from injury caused by glutamate. This peptide rescues neurons from glutamate induced cell death even when added 4.5 hours after glutamate exposure.
