[Brichos domains]
This protein domain of approximately 100 amino acids has been identified in several previously unrelated proteins that are linked to major diseases such as dementia, respiratory distress, and cancer (Sanchez-Pulido et al, 2002). The acronym refers to three genes in which the domain was observed originally: BRI protein (associated with familial British dementia), chondromodulin-1, and surfactant protein C.
In some instances, the conserved Brichos domain is located in the propeptide region that is removed after proteolytic processing. Sanchez-Pulido et al (2002) have proposed that the Brichos domain may be involved in processing and maturation of the corresponding proproteins.
