Bruno is an ovarian protein in Drosophila melanogaster, encoded by the CG31762 gene. It is defined by mutations in the aret locus, which is required for fertility in both sexes (Schüpbach and Wieschaus 1991; Castrillon et al, 1993).
Bruno has been implicated in the translational repression in oogenesis (Webster et al, 1997; Kim-Ha et al, 1995) of a variety of genes, including oskar, a protein that directs abdomen and germ-line formation in the developing embryo (Ephrussi and Lehmann, 1992; Ephrussi et al, 1991; Snee et al, 2008; Reveal et al, 2011). The mammalian homolog of Bruno is NAPOR [neuroblastoma apoptosis-related RNA-binding protein].
