[C1 inhibitor] abbr. also C1I. C1INH is a plasma protein involved in the regulation of the complement cascade. It is a highly glycosylated protein synthesized as an acute phase protein in the liver that functions as a serine protease inhibitor inactivating complement component C1 by inhibition of the proteolytic activity of its subcomponents C1r and C1s. C1INH also inhibits several other proteinases including kallikrein, and coagulation factors XIa and XIIa a number of proteases, including plasmin, factor XIIa, factor XIa, tissue plasminogen activator, and kallikrein (Davis, 1988; Ziccardi and Cooper, 1979). The protein is known also as SERPING1 [
