[caspase recruitment domain-containing protein-9] This protein (536 amino acids) contains an N-terminal caspase recruitment domain (CARD) (Bertin et al, 2000). The gene is expressed in spleen, liver, placenta, lung, brain. It is expressed also in peripheral blood leukocytes and by the HL-60 cell line. CARD9 forms homodimers and has been shown to interact with the CARD domain of BCL10. This interaction activates NF-kappa-B. Hara et al (2007) have reported that deletion of CARD9 results in impaired myeloid cell activation of NF-kappa-B signaling by several receptors containing an ITAM [immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif]
