[caspase homolog] CASH is a protein that acts as an attenuator and/or initiator in signaling for cell death by apoptosis mediated by CD95 and CD120a. The protein, of which two variants exist, contains two N-terminal death effector domains (see: death domain) and can bind through them to each other. The protein also binds to MORT-1 (FADD), and to caspases caspase-8, and caspase-10, which also participate in apoptosis (Goltsev et al, 1997).
The longer variant of CASH lacks several of the conserved caspase active site residues and probably does not possess cysteine protease
