The protein in question is the platelet glycoprotein Ib alpha chain (designated also CD42b-alpha). This protein is identical with Glycocalicin, GPIb-alpha (GP1BA), PIE antigen, KO(a), KO(b), Sib(a). In the nomenclature for platelet antigens the designation for this alloantigen is HPA-2 [human platelet antigen-2].
The antigen is expressed on platelets and megakaryocytes.
