This designation has been given to a second mouse CD59 gene. Following identification of this separate CD59 gene CD59 has been renamed CD59a) (Qian et al, 2000).
Mouse CD59b is 85 % identical at the DNA level and 63 % identical at the amino acid sequence level to CD59a. CD59b encodes a GPI-anchored protein that is functionally active as a membrane attack complex inhibitor. CD59b is expressed selectively in the mouse testis.
