CFSH

[Crustacean female sex hormone] This neurohormone (167 amino acids) has been identified in the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus and the green crab, Carcinus maenas, by Zmora and Chung (2014). The hormone is expressed in distinct neurosecretory cells in the eyestalk ganglia, highly expressed in females but weakly in males, and plays a crucial role in developing adult female phenotypes. Blocking of CFSH expression at the prepubertal stage causes abnormal development of brooding and mating systems upon puberty.

Ventura et al (2014) have identified a homolog of CFSH in the Eastern rock lobster Sagmariasus verreauxi, which is expressed at the same levels of expression in eyestalks from both males and females, suggesting that the CFSH female specificity is not conserved throughout decapod crustaceans.
