CIRE

[C-type lectin immune receptor] CIRE is a murine type 2 membrane protein of 238 amino acids belonging to the family of C-type lectins. CIRE shares 57 % identity with human DC-SIGN and is the mouse homolog of the human protein (Caminschi et al, 2001). In the nomenclature of CD antigens the protein has been given the designation CD209.

The protein is expressed preferentially by myeloid-related CD8-alpha(-) dendritic cells than in the lymphoid-related CD8-alpha(+) dendritic cells. CIRE is expressed almost exclusively in dendritic cells and is not detected in organs such as heart, brain, kidney, liver, and thymus. T-cells do not express CIRE mRNA, but B-cells express it at very low levels.

CIRE is expressed also by long lived plasmacytoid predendritic cells of mouse lymphoid organs that transform into CD8(+) CD205(-) dendritic cells, which are distinct from conventional CD8(+) CD205(+) dendritic cells (O'Keeffe et al, 2002).

For additional information on CD antigens see also: CD antigens MiniCOPE Dictionary.
