[Conserved lymphokine element] This sequence element is known also as the CSF box due to its presence in the promoters of colony stimulating factors (see: CSF).
CLE consists of a highly conserved decanucleotide (5'-GGAGATTCCA-3') found at positions -99 to -108 in the promoter regions of many lymphokine genes, including, for example, the genes encoding IL2, IL3, IL4 IL5, IFN-gamma, G-CSF and GM-CSF.
CLE serves as a binding site for specific DNA binding proteins that function as transcription factors and influence the expression of those genes containing a CLE (see also: gene expression). Optimum binding is stimulated by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (see also: Phorbol esters) and Calcium ionophores (A23187).
For a related conserved element see also: Cytokine 1.
