[Cholinergic neuronal differentiation factor] abbr. also CDF (cholinergic differentiation factor) (Rao et al, 1990). CNDF is isolated from rat heart cell cultures (Fukada et al, 1985, 1991). CNDF can induce previously noradrenergic neurons to synthesize acetylcholine and form cholinergic synapses (Rao et al, 1990). This change in phenotype occurs without alteration in neuronal survival or growth.
CNDF induces the synthesis of choline acetyltransferase, Somatostatin, SP (substance P) and VIP (vasoactive intestinal peptide) and inhibits the synthesis of tyrosine hydroxylase and neuropeptide Y in cultured rat
