[Cytotoxic necrotizing factor-1] This dermonecrotic toxin of 114 kDa is produced by human and animal clinical isolates of Escherichia coli (De Rycke et al, 1990; Blanco et al, 1994; Boquet, 2000). The toxin acts intracellularly (Contamin et al, 2000) and causes cell multinucleation and enlargement in tissue cultures and necrosis in rabbit skin (Falzano et al, 1993). The factor has been shown to interfere with the cell cycle (Falzano et al, 2006; Giamboi-Miraglia et al, 2007) and can be grouped, therefore, among the cyclomodulins.
