[Cytotoxic necrotizing factor-2] This dermonecrotic toxin is produced by human and animal clinical isolates of Escherichia coli (De Rycke et al, 1990). These toxins cause cell multinucleation and enlargement in tissue cultures and necrosis in rabbit skin. CNF2 is a protein of 110 kDa that shares considerable nucleotide and amino acid similarity with Pasteurella multocida toxin (Oswald et al, 1994). The factor has been shown to interfere with the cell cycle (Denko et al, 1997; Pérès et al, 1997) and can be grouped, therefore, among the cyclomodulins.
