A fetal bovine heart endothelial cell line. The cells are used to determine the concentration bFGF or bFGFlike activities such as the CS23, one of the muteins of bFGF, in culture media and biological fluids. Cell proliferation is determined by employing the MTT assay. The addition of 250 ng/mL of heparin to the culture medium increases the proliferation stimulating activity of bFGF approximately 10-fold and allows detection of as low as 10 pg/mL of bFGF (Kajio et al, 1992). Addition of heparin also results in much smaller inter- and intraassay variations (see also: bioassays, cytokine assays).
