[Chorionic somatomammotropin hormone-like 1] This hormone, which is contained within the same cluster of placental lactogen genes as chorionic somatomammotropin (Wiemers et al, 2003), is being referred to also as CS-L [Chorionic somatomammotropin-like] or Lactogen-like. A databank synonym is chorionic somatomammotropin CS-5.
The CSHL1 gene has a single nucleotide substitution in a splice donor site that results in a different mRNA splicing pattern in comparison to other genes in the gene cluster (Chen et al, 1989). CSHL1 is expressed in placenta, but complex alternative splicing yields transcripts that are mostly unable to express a secreted protein
