CTHRC1

[Collagen triple helix repeat containing 1] This secreted glycoprotein of 28 kDa has been identified in a screen for sequences differentially expressed in balloon-injured versus normal arteries (Pyagay et al, 2005). The protein is not expressed in normal arteries. The protein is expressed transiently after injury by fibroblasts of the remodeling adventitia and by smooth muscle cells of the neointima. The protein is expressed also in the matrix of calcifying human atherosclerotic plaques.

Expression of CTHRC1 is induced by TGF-beta and BMP4. The sequence of CTHRC1 is highly conserved from lower chordates to mammals. The protein appears to trimerize by means of a short collagen motif with 12 Gly-X-Y repeats. Trimerization of the protein renders it susceptible to cleavage by ... ... ... ... ...
