[Coupling of ubiquitin conjugation to ER degradation] These domains of approximately 50 amino acids are monoubiquitin binding motifs found in proteins of trafficking and ubiquitination pathways. The CUE domain shares a similar overall architecture with the UBA domain (Kang et al, 2003; Prag et al, 2003). One CUE dimer binds one ubiquitin molecule.

Shih SC et al (2003) have reported that the CUE motif is an evolutionarily conserved ubiquitin binding domain that mediates intramolecular mono-ubiquitylation.
