CXCL12a

The gene encoding this CXC-Chemokine has been identified in the common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) through homology cloning. The gene is an ortholog of human and mouse CXCL12. Like another ortholog, CXCL12b, it is expressed during early development, which is in contrast to other CXC-Chemokines involved in immune functions. CXCL12a is highly expressed in kidney and anterior kidney, but its expression is still more abundant in brain than any other carp CXC-Chemokines.
