this is the name given to a serum factor purified originally from bovine serum that stimulates cathepsin D release in a calcium-dependent manner from lysosomes and rat blood cells but not from leukocytes and lymphocytes. The effects of Ca2+-concentrations (Miyamoto and Terayama, 1975; Takehara and Terayama, 1984). A similar activity is found in human sera and sera from other vertebrates (Terayama H, Fukuzumi, 1987).
Calciferin is considered to be a hormone produced by parathyroids (Yoshikawa and Terayama (1984) and may be involved in liver physiology as it is mitogenic for hepatocytes
