Carcinin is an antimicrobial protein (89 amino acids) produced by the circulating hemocytes of the shore crab, Carcinus maenas (Brockton et al, 2007). The protein contains a WAP domain and is a member of a group of antibacterial peptides referred to as crustins. Carcinin has been described as crustin Cm1 (Bartlett et al, 2002) and its homologs in other species appear to exist in many different isoforms.
