abbr. CASP2. This enzyme is a member of a family of evolutionarily conserved cysteine protease proteins known as caspases. Many of these enzymes are part of a proteolytic cascade that plays a central role in cell death by apoptosis. Caspase-2 has been described originally as ICH-1 [ICE and CED3 homolog-1]. The mouse gene is NEDD2 [Neural Precursor Cell Expressed Developmentally Downregulated 2] and the human gene has been cloned by virtue of sequence similarity with the mouse gene (Kumar et al, 1995).
