Cell competition

This term describes a biological process, observed first in Drosophila melanogaster, where cells compete with each other for survival in an epithelial tissue (Johnston, 2009; Moreno, 2008). Cells that survive this process are being referred to as winner cells and those that don't and undergo cell death by apoptosis have been called loser cells. This process has been shown to occur also in mammalian cells. Loser cells are perfectly viable and proliferate when grown only with other loser cells. Thus, cell competition is a cell quality control mechanism that ensures that viable but suboptimal cells ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
