[Crassostrea gigas Defensin] This defensin-like peptide, which shares some structural features with arthropod defensins and MGD-1 [Mytilus galloprovincialis defensin-1], has been identified in the oyster Crassostrea gigas (Gyegyen et al, 2006) (for related peptides see also: defensin-like peptides). Cg-Def is expressed mainly in the mantle edge but its mRNA concentration remains unchanged after bacterial challenge. Continuous expression in the mantle suggests a key role in oyster by providing a first line of defense against pathogen colonization.
