[chaperokines]
This term has been introduced by Asea et al (2000) for a number of ubiquitously expressed and highly conserved eukaryotic and bacterial heat shock proteins, which, apart from their classical intracellular role as cytoprotective molecular chaperones, also have extracellular functions. These proteins act as intercellular signaling molecules, which merits their inclusion among hormones, cytokines, and growth factors. They exert a number of paracrine immunological and immunomodulatory effects, including the induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and intercellular cell adhesion molecules in a variety of cell types and promoting cell activation
