[N73 protein] This primate-specific protein of 208 amino acids long contains 12 cysteine residues. It does not show any significant sequence homology to other characterized proteins. The protein was identified first in a large scale screen for genes related to cancer development and progression. Its expression in a hepatoma cell line inhibits growth. Expression in NIH 3T3 fibroblasts stimulates growth (Wan et al, 2004). The protein contains an RGD integrin binding motif and may have anti-angiogenic functions.
The protein does not have significant sequence similarity to known chemokines and also does not show characteristic cysteine patterns found in chemokines but shows a gene structure similar to chemokine
