This toxin is known also as Beta-Hemolysin. Beta-toxin is one of the lethal toxins of Clostridium perfringens. It shares sequence homology with the pore-forming Staphylococcus aureus Alpha-toxin, Staphylococcus aureus Gamma-toxin, and Staphylococcus aureus leukocidin (Hunter et al, 1993).
Human endothelial cells are sensitive to the toxic effect of Beta-toxin, which induces release of arachidonic acid and leakage of inositol from these cells (Steinthorsdottir et al, 2000). The toxin causes dermonecrosis and oedema in the dorsal skin of animals and plasma extravasation is mediated via a mechanism involving tachykinin NK1 receptors (Nagahama et al, 2003).
