Conjunctival goblet cells (for overview see: Swamynathan and Wells, 2020) (see also: goblet cells) are slow-cycling cells with proliferative capabilities (Wei et al, 1995; Pellegrini et al, 1999). They share common bipotent progenitors in the forniceal region with keratinocytes (Su et al, 2011). The cells secrete soluble mucins, providing the innermost mucin layer of the tear film and are essential for maintaining ocular surface homeostasis.
