The cDNA encoding coprisin (VTCDVLSFEAKGIAVNHSACALHCIALRKKGGSCQNGVCVCRN) has been isolated by Hwang et al (2009) from bacteria-immunized dung beetle, Copris tripartitus.
Coprisin mRNA is up-regulated in response to bacterial infection. The amino acid sequence of mature Coprisin shows a high degree of sequence similarity to defensin-like peptides of Anomala cuprea and Allomyrina dichotoma. A 9-mer peptide, LLCIALRKKamide, exhibits potent antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
A coprisin analog (a disulfide-linked dimer of the 9-mer peptide termed CopA3) has been shown to prevent inflammation and mucosal damage in a mouse
