Called also: Councilman cells. This term refers to acidophilic inclusion bodies in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes, which also show shrinkage or swelling (ballooning degeneration) (Klion and Schaffner, 1966). These cells are seen in a variety of virus infections as well as autoimmune hepatitis and hereditary hepatitis (Parent et al, 2005; Huerre et al, 2001; Marianneau et al, 1997; Ballardini et al, 1995; Yoshida et al, 1987).
It has been suggested that these cells are hepatocytes undergoing cell death by apoptosis (Kerr et al, 1979; Huerre et al, 2001)
