These mice, sometimes referred to as Cre-Master mice [Cre-mediated mast cell eradication mice], contain Cre recombinase introduced into one copy of the gene encoding carboxypeptidase A3 (Cpa3), which is expressed at very high levels only in the mast cell lineage. They possess unperturbed Kit function and are characterised by the complete absence of mast cells in connective and mucosal tissues and have no other defects in the immune system apart from a partial reduction in splenic basophils (Feyerabend et al, 2011).
