gene symbol CRQ. This Drosophila melanogaster gene (gene: CG4280) (Franc et al, 1996) is a homolog of CD36. Croquemort functions specifically in professional phagocytes (hemocytes), the macrophages, and acts as a receptor for apoptotic cells. Franc et al (1999) have reported that the expression of Croquemort is regulated by the amount of apoptosis. Croquemort is essential for efficient phagocytosis of apoptotic corpses but is not required for the engulfment of bacteria. However, a role in innate immunity is suggested by the observation that Croquemort acts as a phagocytic receptor for Staphylococcus aureus (Stuart et al, 2005).
