The amino acid sequence of this intracellular cysteine proteinase inhibitor, known previously as CPI-B [cysteine proteinase inhibitor B] (Green et al, 1984), has been reported by Ritonja et al (1985). The protein is known also as STFB [Stefin B] (Jerala et al, 1988) and is a member of the cystatin superfamily.
Cystatin B is a tight and reversibly binding inhibitor of the cysteine proteinases (Green et al, 1984) discovered originally as an inhibitor of cathepsin B in a variety of tissues (Lenney et al, 1979). Cystatin B is thought to prevent inappropriate proteolysis caused by the action of lysosomal cysteine proteinases
