This protein is a member of the cystatin superfamily of cysteine proteases. Cystatin C is a protein of 13 kDa (Grubb et al, 1982). The protein is known also as Cystatin-3 (gene symbol CST3) or Gamma-TRACE (Grubb and Löfberg, 1982). The protein is identical with post-gamma globulin (Tonelle et al, 1979) and was identified originally as a protein in cerebrospinal fluid and urine from patients with renal failure.
Cystatin C is a potent inhibitor of C1 family cysteine peptidases (papain, cathepsin B, cathepsin L, and cathepsin H (Hall et al, 1995; Rawlings and Barrett, 1990; Brown and Dziegielewska, 1997). Cystatin C is the most abundant extracellular inhibitor of cysteine proteases
