Approved gene symbol: CST1 [cystatin-1]. This protein is a member of the cystatin superfamily of cysteine proteases. The human gene has been cloned and characterized by Saitoh et al (1987, 1989). The encoded protein is closely related to Cystatin S, showing 10 different amino acid residues in the sequence comprising in 113 residues (Isemura et al, 1986). Cystatin SA-I, purified from human submandibular-sublingual saliva by Al-Hashimi et al (1998) represents an extended long form of Cystatin SN. It is identical in sequence with Cystatin SN but contains an additional octapeptide at its aminoterminus. This octapeptide extension differs from that found in an extended long form of Cystatin S
