approved gene symbol CST11; in some databanks the designation CST8L is used synonymously. This protein is a member of the cystatin superfamily of the papain family of cysteine proteases (Brown and Dziegielewska, 1997) and has been identified by Hamil et al (2002) in Macaca mulatta epididymis. The human gene on chromosome 20p11.2 is expressed predominantly in the male reproductive tract and gives rise to an alternatively spliced transcript lacking one exon. Expression of the gene is regulated by androgens. The protein also has antimicrobial activity and thus may have functions as a defense peptide.
