Many different assay systems are available for quantifying concentrations of cytokines or for detecting cells that express them.
Knowledge about the quantitative and qualitative nature of cytokine production is critical in the understanding of normal and pathological processes. The availability of accurate and sensitive methods for the measurement of cytokines is an absolute prerequisite for the proper use of these mediators in clinical practice. Such assays are of value in monitoring patients treated with recombinant cytokines or receiving anticytokine therapy (see, for example: Cytokine gene transfer and subentries "Clinical use and significance" for major entries).
