this descriptive term has been used to describe active phagocytosis of leukocytes, erythrocytes, and platelets by activated tissue-resident macrophages (histiocytes). Depending upon the nature of the ingested cell type the terms erythrophagocytosis and lymphophagocytosis have been employed to refer to ingestion of erythrocytes and lymphocytes, respectively.
Cells showing signs of cytophagocytosis are enlarged and assume the appearance of what pathologists have referred to as bean-bag cells. The process has been referred to also as cannibalism. Cytophagocytosis, cellular cannibalism, and emperipolesis
