[death executioner caspase related to Apopain/Yama] DECAY is one of the caspases regulating cell death by apoptosis in Drosophila melanogaster (gene CG14902). DECAY shares a high degree of homology with mammalian caspase-3 and caspase-7. DECAY lacks a long prodomain and thus appears to be one of the effector caspases involved in apoptosis. Ectopic expression of DECAY in cultured cells induces cell death by apoptosis. During oogenesis DECAY mRNA is expressed in egg chambers of all stages where it may play a role in apoptosis of nurse cells
